The Women In Government and Politics Conference. Theme: A Model For Change.

Attended the Women In Government and Politics Conference today at the Wheatbaker Hotel,Ikoyi Lagos. This was the second series of the programme:Gender Emergence and Economic Development,organised by the Winihin Jemade Series WJS.It was with great honor that I joined other seasoned names in the political space like renowned blogger, politcal commentator, social economic analyst and media practitioner
Japheth Omojuwa, Fidelis Mbah a seasoned news correspondent with the BBC and Mr Chibuike Mgbeahuruike of Transition Monitoring Group(TMG)as panel discussants on the theme: Model For Change: Will quota system help gender within political party system and the electoral processes? It was particularly welcoming to see more men participating with so much depth and in the end everyone agreed that quota systems although a temporary measure, is the appropriate intervention to achieve more women quota in politics,it most be canvassed to be enshrined into the Nigerian Constitution,and made mandatory for the politcal parties following up with adequate monitoring for implementation by agencies such as INEC,CSOs and the NGOs."Its a model already working perfectly in Rwanda",says the Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria His Excellency,Joseph Habineza. According to him,it has produced the sucess rate of 64% women in parliament,an achievement Rwanda is proud to be associated with worldwide. The host of the event was Mrs Winihun Jemade,while others in attendance included seasoned Lawyer;Ayo Obe,blogger and political analyst;Miss Zee Usman,Mrs Betty Abah of Ceehope Foundation,students representatives of University of Lagos and of course the media, the Csos and private stakeholders where not left out.
